  6.   Notes for William Moses Samples:

William and Nancy reared their family near Sword's Creek, Russell Co VA in the late years of the 19th centruy. Most of the KY Samples are direct descendants of William and Nancy.

William might have come to Russell Co VA from Botecourt Co VA. William was deeded 50 acres on Sugar Run , a branch of Clinch River, on 24 Sept 1804. The previous owner was Patrick Kendricks (Deed records Vol 3 page 521).

In William's will, he gave daughters Delilah Hunt and Polly Samples only one negro slave each by reason that they had disobliged him so much.(Was this because Polly had a son Andrew Jackson out of wedlock; the father is claimed to be "Cap" Hunt - any relationship to Delilah's husband?) Polly's mother noted that William had not taken care of Polly in his will and left all her property to her.

At the time of his death William left 22 slaves appraised at $6,100 and sold for &5,547.39. Also among his property was "one still and worm and three tubs" which were bought by Jackson Samples for $1,650.

In early 1800s Wm Moses was tall and wore long grey whiskers. He was well dressed and had a fine appearance.Entered into county politics.
