    The graduate of the University of Virginia was admitted to the bar in 1843. Settling in Charlottesville, he was elected Commonwealth's Attorney for Albemarle County in 1852. In 1859 he was elected to the Court of Appeals. After the Civil War he returned to private practice, the courts being manned by reconstructionists. The charter member of the Virginia Bar Association represented the Lee family in the suit for the Arlington Estate.
