    [Includes notes (no source provided): William Shields Reid, Jr. attended Amherst college and Princeton University. When Virginia seceded, he raised an Artillery Company, refused to take any commission of any kind, volunteered as a private, fought through all the worst of the Civil War, was killed at Malvern Hill. Major Samuel V. Reid, his brother, found in his coat pocket a commission with the rank of Major on FitzHugh Lee's Staff, dated the week before he died. Lee was promoted to Brig. General July 26, 1862.]
