William PORTEOUS marr Grisal LINSAY, dau of George Linsay, 24aug1760 at Whitburn, W. Lothian (familysearch). Rev. William Porteous, D.D. (1735-1812), minister of Whitburn, West Lothian (1760-70) and (from 1770) Wynd Church, Glasgow, marr (1) Grizel Lindsay, had issue, and (2) Marion, dau of Rev. Charles Moore, Stirling, and sister of Dr. John Moore; a portrait of William Porteous was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition, 1894 (catalogue). William Porteous was b. 11mar1735, son of James Porteous of Dalvick, minister of Monzievaird, educ Univ of Glasgow, ord to Whitburn 1760, d. 12jan1812. He marr (1) 26aug1760 Grizel (d. 12jan1774, dau of George Lindsay, min of N. Leith) and had issue: James (b. 1761, of Bonhill, Jamaica), Elizabeth (b. 30may1764, marr 27oct1794, Robert Spears, Glasgow merchant), George (1766-1793 Jamaica). He marr (2) 8aug1785 Marion (d. without issue 4mar1817, dau of Charles Moore, min of Stirling) (Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, Lanarkshire, p. 443). William was son of Rev. James Porteous (1701-25nov1780) and Elizabeth Hally (d. 1738) (Fasti). Grizell Lindsay was dau of Rev. George Lindsay (d. 24sep1764) (Fasti). The children of William Porteous and Grizal Linsay were b. at Whitburn; George was b. 1765 (IGI). Leith) had dau Elizabeth (Mrs. Spears); Mrs. Porteous d. 1817, Glasgow. (Mrs. Porteous was Marion Moore). William Porteous (No. 1670, matriculated 1754) was known as “Buff the Beggars” from his strictness in investigating claims for relief at the Town’s Hospital. “Porteous and the deil Buff the beggars weel” Brother in law of No. 986, whose sister he married. No. 986 was Dr. John Moore (1729 Stirling-1806 Richmond), son of Charles of Stirling and father of Sir John Moore, hero of Corunna (Glasgow Matriculation Albums). References
