!BIOGRAPHY: Letter from Gerald Keith, Saint John, NB, to Rick Crume, Glyndon, MN; 1830-1884; Letter dtd 5 Jul 1976; ; Rick Crume's file #P 033; NOTE: "Rev. William Pennington . . . was baptised into the Free Baptist Church at Bear Island (Queensbury Parish, York, NB) in 1830 and became an ordained minister in 1832. On 18 Jun 1833 he organized the first Baptist congregation at Upper Greenwich. This church is now known as the Oak Point United Baptist Church. He served a number of pastorates in York, Kings and Westmorland counties of NB and in the state of Maine. He died at Houlton, ME, 27 Feb 1884. On 17 Jan 1837 he married Isabella Slipp, daughter of John Slipp of Wickham parish, Queens County, NB. She outlived her husband and also died at Houlton, ME."

At a meeting held at Wakefield, Carleton County, on October 13 of that year the representatives of the following six churches formed a Free Baptist Conference for New Brunswick: Wakefield and Jacksontown, Carleton County; Bear Island, York County; Little River, Queens County; Lincoln, Sunbury County; and Upper Sussex, Kings County. Two ordained ministers were present, Samuel Nutt and Charles McMullen, besides one licensed preacher, W. E. Pennington, and a number of laymen." p. 245: "William Pennington (1804-?) a native of Queensbury, was the first man ordained by the Conference; he organized a score of churches and baptized more than a thousand converts."

  1. P 146; NOTE: "On Sep 7, 1833 the Free Christian Baptist Church, Blissville was organized under the guidance of Elder William Pennington, with brother Daniel Smith as first Deacon. The Lake Baptist Church in New Jerusalem [was] established in 1835 through the efforts of Elder William E Pennington and Elder Samuel Hartt. Rev. William Pennington performed marriage ceremony for Ezekial Seeley & Rebecca Harris in Blissville in 1850. Rev. William E Pennington was in Tracey, N.B. attending a church committee meeting on Jan 7, 1854. The First Baptist Church at Bald Hill, Queens Co was organized by the Rev William Pennington on Sep 18, 1885 with 40 members. The church paid $80.00 annually for the support of a minister."
