Educator: After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1840 his desire to enter politics was delayed when he went to Bethany to help his father-in-law, Alexander Campbell, establish Bethany College. In 1855 he lost a race for a seat in Congress. In 1866 he became president of the school. After the US Civil War, when the state of West Virginia was formed, he was selected by both Republicans and Democrats to be a delegate at the state's constitutional convention and he was named the state's first Superintendent of Public Schools. He was also chosen to select and inscribe the West Virginia Memorial Stone to be placed at the Washngton Monument in Washington D.C.
