Taylor GROOM: age 22 single born Cumberland Co. son of Eliza Patteson occupation: farmer BRIDE: age 16 single born Buckingham Co. daughter of Julia Payne NOTE: black.”

1870 US Census (VA, Buckingham, Marshall Twp, penned sh 49, stamped sh 339, dwelling 369, ln 15) William Payne 27, mu, b. VA, farm laborer, couldn’t read or write. His apparent wife, Eliza 17, bl, b. VA, couldn’t read or write. Their apparent children, both bl, b. VA: George 3; and Willie 6 mos (b. Jan). Also living with them, relationship unknown, Thomas Shores 4, bl, b. VA.

1870 US Census (VA, Buckingham Co, Marshall Twp, pg 339), 27 (b. VA), listed as mulatto. Wife, Eliza, 17, listed as Black. Children George, 3, and Willis, 6 mos (b. Jan 1870). Also listed, Thomas Shores, 4 (Black)... no idea what relationship.

1873 Buckingham County Births Register lists the following children born to Wm and Eliza or Ann Eliza Payne: John 5/8/1873; Henry 8/23/1878; W. A. Nov 1880; Billia Sep 1882; Joseph T. and his twin Julian 2/11/1886. Per oral history of Mabel Johnson, Julian died as an infant.

1880 US Census (VA, Buckingham, Marshall Dist, ED 36, sh 2B, ln 26) the entire family is listed with the surname PAGE, as follows: P. William 36, bl, farm laborer, b. VA, both parents b. VA, he couldn’t read or write. His wife, Liza 26, mu, b. VA, both parents b. VA, she was keeping house. Their children, all mu, all b. VA: Geo 12; Mary 9; Nellie 8; Julia 5; Lucy 4, and Henry 2.
