Per oral history of Mabel Johnson, Eliza Trent was sold as a slave at 2 yrs old, was told she had a brother named Peter, never knew her parents, and she smoked a corn-cob pipe. General Lee surrendered when she was 5 or 6. Per Marian Sipes, Ann’s father was probably white, she looked very white. 1867 Per “Lost Marriages of Buckingham County Virginia”, by. Randy Kidd and Jeanne Stinson (pub. Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, GA), “Wm. Payne & Ann Eliza Trent 6 Apr 1867; married by Wm. H. Taylor GROOM: age 22 single born Cumberland Co. son of Eliza Patteson occupation: farmer BRIDE: age 16 single born Buckingham Co. daughter of Julia Payne NOTE: black.” 1873 Buckingham County Births Register lists the following children born to Wm and Eliza or Ann Eliza Payne: John 5/8/1873; Henry 8/23/1878; W. A. Nov 1880; Billia Sep 1882; Joseph T. and his twin Julian 2/11/1886. Per oral history of Mabel Johnson, Julian died as an infant. 1920 She was 68, a widow, listed as “Nancy Trent” and living with her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Morris Trent, in Fairfield, Henrico, VA. 1930 She was 77, a widow, listed as “Eliza Moss” and living with her daughter and son-in-law, Bettie and Morris Trent, in Fairfield, Henrico, VA. 1940 She was 88, a widow, listed as “Liza Moss” and living with her daughter and son-in-law, Bettie and Henry Claibourne, in Fairfield, Henrico, VA. 1943 VA Bureau of Vital Statistics, Death Index, reel 7, c. 2, p. 276, Annie E. Buckingham County, VA, died 13 Apr 1943 from uremia and chronic nephritis and chronic myocarditis. She died at her home, RFD R3, Henrico County, Fairfield, and was buried 16 Apr 1943 in Woodland Cemetery, undertaker was W. J. Watkins, 619 Brook Road. Informant was Bettie Claiborne, same address. |
