Cause of death was Pulmonary Tuberculosis on Certificate of Death (File 23144, Jefferson County, 1918). His wife died less than a year later. I've been unable to locate a census sheet with children living with them, but there were three that lived to adulthood. Herman Maxwell, Robert Evan, and L Albert. There is a birth record for a Earl M Nichols born April 1, 1911 in Grayson County, mother is Essie Pence. In the 1920 cenus an eight year old Maxwell Nichols is living with Essie's sister Stella Pence Pierce (Hardin County, Long Grove, District 36, family 36) and is reported to be the nephew of the Head of House. Later in life he used Herman as his first name rather than Earl. In the 1930 Census There is an Albert Nichols living with Essie's mother in 1920 (Hardin County, East View, District 57, House 106) and is reported as the grandson of the Head of House. In the 1920 census Robert Evan is living in Louisville with Essie's brother William Clarence (Ward 6, District 124, house 972) and is reported to be the nephew of the Head of House.
