After the war, the Mosher families moved to Hemlock, Wood County, Wisconsin.

In 1870 he homesteaded on Section 30 Round Lake Township. He was postmaster of the Round Lake Post Office in 1872 (the post office was at his farm). He was founder and leader of the Round Lake Farmers Alliance and an active member of the G.A.R. (The Grand Army of the Republic). This was a very strong political organization composed of veterans of the Civil War. William entertained at G.A.R. meetings with his violin. His family was among the founders of the Round Lake Presbyterian Church.
