Occupation? Clockmaker

William Morland was the son of the clockmaker Richard Morland who was in business both at Kirkby Malzeard and Masham some four miles away. Richard was born at Kirkby Malzeard in 1761, married at Masham in 1788 and had three children there including Richard in 1789 and William in 1792. He then returned to his home village some time before a daughter was baptized there in 1795. Richard and William both followed their father into clockmaking, Richard at Kirkby Malzeard and Boroughbridge and William at Kirkby Malzeard, Sunderland and Durham.

William Morland, son of Richard senior, brother of Richard junior and father of James Iddison, does not appear in Kirkby Malzeard records after his marriage to Ann in 1813 and they seem to have left the village. Our next information about him is his marriage to Mary Varley at Sunderland in 1833. William and Mary, who was twenty-four years younger than her husband, were to have six children. At the time of the 1841 census they were to be found at Durham and they were to remain there, William dying there in 1865. At the time of the 1861 census one of their sons, also William and then aged eighteen, was an apprentice, presumably to his father, but it is known he did not pursue a career in horology.
