Like many of his neighbors, William fought with the Washington County militia at the Battle of Kings Mountain. He was wounded in both the left arm and left knee; the latter wound resulted in the loss of his leg. On 20 Dec 1787 William was awarded a pension of 15 pounds per year from the state of Virginia for his war service (retroactive to 1 Jan. 1786). The application noted that William had held the rank of private and had been entitled to pay at the rate of 24 pounds annually while he was in service. Two years later, in October, 1789 William's pension was increased by 3 pounds yearly. |
