In 1833 he came with his parents to Monroe County, Mich. He was united in marriage to Miss Milenda Dennis, January 1st, 1848 (actually 1849). In In 86(has to be incorrect) he with his wife and seven children located in Northwest towhship, William County, O. He was the father of sixteen children, ten sons and six daughters. He was an acceptable member of the R.U.B. church and very frequently expressed his confidence in his Savior. During his illness he was submissive and patient, bearing his sufferings with christian fortitude and , resignation, firmly abiding his time and anxiously awaiting the hour of his departure. He had tasted the bitter cup of earthly sorrow and had his full share of losses and crosses, but no more will the dear old father bear the pain and disappointments of this life, and his son Andrew xxxxxx made him truly say

  "Farewell my freinds and children dear,
  I leave the earth and leave you here;
  I go to rest with kindred clay.
  Until the resurrection day."
  His funeral was held on Sunday, Aug. 3rd, from the residence of his son, Andrew, sourth of Suring Lake, and his remains were taken to the Pleasent View R.U.B. church where Rev. G.W. Long preached and an appropriate sermon before a very large audience assisted by the Friend choir.
  Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.
  Father McLain leaves six sons, two great-grandchildren, one brother, three sisters and many friends to cherish his memory. May the all find favor in the eves of him who was sent to heal the broken hearted and comfort all who are bruised. The children wish to express their gratitude to all those who rendered such timely aid, and assistance in the burial of their father.

(Marion Watt has that this obituary came from Obituary :Montpelier Enterprise, Thursday, Aug 14, 1902. Montpelier Library, Montpelier, Ohio. )

On September 30, 1862 a R.H. Wicoff sold 40 acres to William H. McLain in Northwest Township for 500 dollars. It would appear that William sold that same land to A.W. Dennis (presumably some kin to Melinda) on July 30, 1872 for 1000 dollars. I believe this same tract of land was sold to William's son Alonzo in 1879 by A.W. Dennis for 1000 dollars.

Louise McLain Shambaugh has that he was a farmer and veterinarian in practice. She also has papers that says there was a child born on August 8, 1864 whose name is Willy. This is a seperate child from William Harvey McLain, II.
