Facts and Events
Louise McLain Shambaugh has that he and his parents came to Monroe County, Michigan when he was 14 years old. John G. bought his land in adjacent Bridgewater Township just a few miles from William. His wife Ruth Dean died leaving John and their yougest son Charles at the farm. The other children were married by then. Charles stayed with John G. until they sold the farm in about 1901. John G. was physically very strong and healthy and had extremely simple habits. He was capable of complete relaxation as he could doze seated on a log, stump or inclined ladder. "At 80 years of age he could easily leap through a loop formed with his hands holding a broomstick." He was also a delightful storyteller. John lived with his younger sisters for a few years and then moved to Hill City, Kansas, where he lived with his daughter until his death at age 92.
