William Maitland was baptised on 6th March 1786 at Daviot in Aberdeenshire, son of Christian Booth and her husband James Maitland, a farmer. The family lived at Pitblain, a farm or small hamlet a short distance north-east of Daviot village. William was a twin, having a twin sister called Marjory. It would appear that William died young; whilst deaths and burials were not being recorded at Daviot at this time, his parents went on to have another son called William in 1791.
