Will Abstract
- Will of William Madden Senior.
- Second, names "well and dearly beloved Wife Jane Madden one third of all my Real Estate of Lands and Houses to be hers and hers only to give sell or alienate as she in her wisdom may see fitting and likewise an eaqual share of all my personally Estate of money goods and chattels".
- "Thirdly I give and bequeath unto my son Thos. Jefferson Madden one third of my real Estate, or one Hundred and ten acres of the Robison Quarter and no more".
- "Fourthly I give and bequeath my Son James Madison Madden one dollar and no more".
- "Fiftly I give and bequeath to my son "Wm. H.H.? Madden one third of my real Estate and one yoke of oxen and no more".
- "Sixthly I give and bequeath to my Daughter Sarah Madden an Equal share of my personal Estate and no more".
- "Sevently I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Elizabeth Madden an Eaqual share of my personal Estate besides a horse and mare a Cort? four sows and Pigs, Bed and Bedding with the privilage of living at or in the Holmstead during here single life without any __ or hindrance of Wm. H.H. Madden or any One and no more".

- Be it Remembered that on the 25th day of November 1834 the within last will and Testament of William Madden Dec'd was produced before me Henry Neth? Cklerk of the Probate Court of said County and proven by the Oath of Adam Douglas and William Strain two of the Subscribing witnesses thereto to be his last will and Testament for the purposes therein mentioned the same William Madden, was at the time of signing, sealing, Acknowledgeing, publishing and Declaring the same of sound mind and understanding.

State of Indiana Harrison County: Sct. Circuit Court – On this ninth day of April in the year A.D. 1833 personally appeared in Open Court before the Honorable John F Ross presiding Judge of the Harrison County Circuit Court now sitting it being a Court of record William Madden Senior a resident of Boone Township in the County of Harrison and State of Indiana aged seventy-one years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. He entered the service sometime in January in the year 1781 [last digit written over and unclear could be 1780] in Frederick County and State of Virginia (was numbered) and ordered out by a Sergeant to meet at Winchester Virginia to guard prisoners at which place he immediately repaired and served three months under Captain Reynolds during which time he knew no officer hire in Command there than his Captain his Lieutenant's name was Leath[?]2, which was Lieutenant was consumptive and died in a short time the name of his Ensign was Jenkins. The aforesaid term of three months he served in guarding prisoners in part of the time in Winchester and a part at the Barracks about four miles from Winchester at the end of which three months he received a written discharge signed by Captain Reynolds he was discharged he thinks in the month of April – and secondly he entered the service by the same order and in the same way in the month of May above the first of the month in the year 1781 in the County of Frederick and State of Virginia and marched Immediately to Winchester and joined Captain Joe Berry whose Company was attached to Colonel Edmonds Regiment not far from Richmond in old Virginia whose Regiment was attached to the command of General Lafayette in marching from Winchester to join the Army we marched through the Town of Falmouth, Fredericksburg and on until we joined Lafayette's Army and then marched through Richmond and about six miles from Richmond from which place we retreated or retired up the Country and up James River after Cornwallis retired to his shipping we marched back again nearly on the same route – and scouting until the relief came, when he was discharged by a written discharge signed by William Green he served in that aforementioned tour under Captains Berry, Marshall and Green – he was discharged the last of July or first of August, he served in the last mentioned tour three months, one of his written discharges was lost the other he gave to George Nichols who said he would take it and try get him service pay since which time he has never seen it, and thirdly he entered the service about the first of August 1781 a few days after his second discharge under the command of Captain Bell and before he started on his Tour he was ordered by his Captain to drive a Team which was pressed belonging to this deponent's father which team he drove in hauling provisions to Falmouth a part of the time of the last Tour and the balance of the time he was engaged in driving peeves for the Army and was discharged about the last of October being Intended for a 3 months Tour and wanted but 2 or 3 days of 3 months he received no written discharge for the last term, that he was born in Frederick County, near Battletown [?]3 in the state of Virginia and that he resided there when he entered the service of the United States and in the year 1817 he immigrated to this County and State where he now resides, he was born in the month of February 27th 1762 his age is recorded in his father's Bible which Bible was left in Virginia he was called into service by being numbered and receiving orders from his officers to march – he here states the names of General Lafayette, Colonel Edmonds, he saw Generals Wayne and Steuben during the 2nd tour that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his services except the testimony of John Madden and Henson Johnson whose affidavit is hereto annexed – he hereby are relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the agency of any State. Personally appeared in open Court Henson Johnson a credible person and made oath that the second tour of three months as set forth in the foregoing declaration William Madden Senior is true and correct to the best of his knowledge and belief that he served at the same time and in the same Regiment and was well acquainted with the said William Madden and knows of the services of aforesaid of his 2nd tour of 3 months. Personally appeared in open Court John Madden a credible witness and made oath that William Madden Senior his Brother left home for the purposes mentioned in his declaration at the times mentioned and returned at the times mentioned and this deponent believes he served as he states. S/ John Madden

[f p. 14: On September 5, 1853 in Illinois, Massac County, Jane Madden, 79, filed for a widow's pension under the 1853 act stating that she is the widow of William Madden, a revolutionary pensioner; that she married him May 15, 18__ [other documents indicate they were married May 12, 1800]; and that her husband died October 15, 1833. [likely s/b 1834 based upon date of his will]]
[Facts in file: the widow's maiden name was Jane or Jenny Hainey or Haney; the widow lived in Harrison County Indiana in 1856
[Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $20 per annum commencing March 4th, 1831, for service as a private for 6 months in the Virginia militia. His widow was pensioned in a like amount.]
