Excerpt from History of Hannah Maria Johnson Herlihy, 10 Aug 01, author: Bill Herlihy:

" From Dorothy Seeger's October 16, 1987 letter comes this anecdote about Hannah's father: ' Shortly after he was married, the building he was working on collapsed and a number of workmen were buried in the rubble. When they dug him out, they decided he was gone and put him aside to look for a more likely prospect for recovery. though unconscious, he didn't have a fractured skull, but he did have a badly broken leg. When they got him to the hospital (which he always called the "horsepital") they set his leg and hung a weight so it wouldn't turn out shorter, but they just hung the weight over the bed in a crowded room. Everyone who passed by bumped into the weight which gave him excruciating pain. He detached it.

So he had a leg shorter than the other and walked with a limp for the rest of his life. Since he never got any sort of built up shoe, by the time I knew him the other leg had bowed outward. It must have been uncomfortable but he never complained. He used a cane and walked for miles until he went blind in old age and couldn't see his way around.' [ His death certificate lists amblyopia: dimness of sight with apparent change in the eye structures associated especially with the toxic effects of certain drugs or chemicals or with dietary deficiencies- Webster's Third International Dictionary, 1961.]'

Here are some comments about Bill Johnson, by his grandson, Frank Herlihy. He liked his beer. He was a front-man bricklayer. In those days, it was a common practice for the side walls of many buildings to be constructed with used brick. Side walls did not require a master bricklayer. Bill Johnson was a generous man who would give you the shirt off his back. He helped buy the groceries for the Mooney family, after Mr. Mooney passed away."
