Bill Herlihy's Sept. 25, 1987 History of Hannah Johnson Herlihy, Page 2:

There are two Bradfords in England. One is a few hundred miles South of Manchester, and is a smaller place. The Bradford where I think she was born, is in the County of York(shire). The city is 30 miles Northeast of Manchester. Just to the East of Bradford is the city of Leeds (where the wife of her Uncle, Sam Johnson, came from). No one in the family ever mentioned the city of Bradford, which reinforces the idea that the family stay there was short. I had been told that she had been born in Manchester.

The Birth Certificate shows: x- - the mark of Lavinia Johnson. She was probably illiterate, but there is a slight possibility that John Blomely, the Junior Deputy Registrar, was lazy or in a hurry, and didn't turn the book around for her to sign.

Same document, Page 3: Hannah's Life
The family moved from Bradford to Manchester (County of Lancaster, now called Lancashire) where they registered her birth on June 18, 1877, one month to the day after her birth. The family may have lived in Manchester until 1879-1880.

In 1879-1880, Hannah's sister, Elizabeth, was born in London. The family may have moved to London earlier. The family lived in London until 1882-1883, when they went back to Manchester for a short while, before coming to the States. During this time, Bill Johnson, Sam Johnson, and some of the older brothers lived in London (see Uncle Sam's 1939 letter, page 2).

In Uncle Sam's 1936 letter, page 1, he writes, " Dora (Uncle Sam's daughter??) lives near where you last lived in London, not far from Holloway Road." The meaning is not clear whether Bill Johnson and family lived on or near Holloway Road. In his 1939 letter, he states: Dora (Johnson?) Barber lives at 74 Upper Tollington Park Finsbury Park, London N., "not far from where you (Hannah) lived in London." He continued, " I was only once in your house in London. I seldom saw your Father and uncles when we were all in London." ..... Page 4

In 1883 Hannah immigrated with her parents, her younger sister Minnie, and her younger sister Elizabeth (Lizzie). Mrs. Dorothy Seegar states that her Mother, Lizzie Johnson, was three years old when they came to the States, and that Hannah was a year or so older. In 1883 Hannah would have been 5-6 years old. For many years I thought my grandmother was six years old when she left the Old country. In October 1982 my Father, Francis William Herlihy, told me she was eight years old when she arrived here. He passed away two months after telling me this; as a result of his ill health, he may have mis-remembered her age. The Johnson family came to New York City, possibly the Borough of Manhattan. Three of Bill Johnson's brothers immigrated to the USA, altho only Alf Johnson stayed permanently. I wonder if Alf Johnson and family came over with them? Since Sam Johnson was in Texas ca. 1883-1885, he may have made the Atlantic crossing at the same time...If Sam Johnson crossed over with the Bill Johnson family, the deep business depression of 1883 may have caused him to wander to Texas for work. Mrs. Dorothy Seegar wrote in her June 24, 1987 letter, " The family arrived (in the USA) at a very bad time. They had heard there was plenty of work, but by the time there was a panic on and things were pretty tight, My mother was 3 yrs old and your grandmother a year or two older. They had accents (dropped h's,etc.) and had a hard time when they got to school. Mother said the teacher had sent her out of the classroom to sit under the piano because when she tried to say "house" it came out "ouse." When she got out to the auditorium, there was your grandmother, sent out for the same reason."
