Facts and Events
1850 Meriwether, Georgia
Research Notes: Several trees have William N. as the son of Levi and Mary Ann Hand Jester or William and Sarah Hay Jester. This is in error. In the late 1970s, Donna Sue Jester, a descendant of William Riley Jester of Miller County, Arkansas, hand extracted every William, William R, or Riley Jester born in between 1834-1837 with a birth in Georgia. She found one. William Jester in Cherokee County. Newton wasn't added to the equation due to being listed as Newton. She was looking for Riley.
William N. joined the CSA as W.N. Jester, Private, Company K, 46th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, Confederate "United States Civil War Soldiers Index, 1861-1865," while William R. joined Company E, 3rd Arkansas Infantry with sons of Levi and Burgess who have been identified as brothers of William in Cherokee County. William N. died and Nancy filed to get his pay. Some of the error occurred because Benjamin F. son of William named a son Levi Newton. This is a one time occurrence. Newton is handed down in William N.'s family. While Riley is handed down religiously in the families of William and Burgess. When you look at naming patterns, you have to have repetition to be a pattern, not a one time occurrence. The likelihood that William N is a grandson of Thomas and Mary Ann White Holmes Jester is going to be hard to prove, as I have researched Thomas' lines for 38 years and there just isn't a spot for him.
