Whoever typed the marriage records for Jackson County, West Virginia had trouble distinguishing capital S from capital L on the original. Several of these records have these initials wrong and William's record is one of them. This birth record has his name as Wiliam S. and has his mother as Mary. Both are doubtful based on the 1870 census record. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=1825205&Type=Birth

W M 1 S The birth states are not recorded here because it appears that the enumerator has confused the lines. It looks like the last two children were born in Missouri; the rest in 'Virginia' but should have been in West Virginia.
