1845 (DEED 38.237) Tariffville Mft. Co. makes a rental agreement with William and David, leasing the farm lot to erect a house, lower story to be a dry goods store, upper story to be a dwelling. Rent $20 yearly for first 20 years, etc. 1846 (36:327) David and William Holmes of Simsbury spoke of land and buildings in Tariffville next to the Tariffville Mfg. Co. (As of 20 Sep 2004 te shell of the old Tariffville Mft. Co. was still in existence on the back road to Granby, probably what they called the "Granby Turnpike" in those days (38:267).) 1846 (37:221) David received money in a mortgage on the same land and buildings in Tariffville, half of which was held by William. 1846 (37:222) William received from David, settling a debit note using his half of the same Tariffville land as collateral. 1847 (36:374) David and William spoke of the same building in Tariffville. 1850 (37:498) David again received money for the Tariffville land, "it being the same premises on which I now live ..." 1860 Census - William ran a boarding house in Tariffville(referred to as the "Alms House" ** in his obituary). 1870 Census - William states he was made a U.S. Citizen.

        • Almshouses were provisions made for the town poor in ninety towns of the state. Some were in operation as late as 1906. Paupers maintained by the state were cared for in a private almshouse at Tariffville, which was commonly known as the "state almshouse."
