Research notes

  • Lennie Hasty said that William Jefferson was called Billy. He is the 1st 7th Day Adventist. He didn't know that there was a 7th Day Adventist church but was reading in the Bible and felt that the Sabath should be on Saturday and started observing that as his Sabbath. It was much later that he found or heard of the 7th Day Adventist. There was a law in the South called Sunday Blue Laws, stating what you could do on Sundays. He built a church and worshiped on Saturdays, the church was burned and he was thrown in jail. Florida didn't enforce these rules and so they moved over the State Line into FL.
  • Blue Sunday meant you can't work on Sundays. William Jefferson and his sons went fishing. They got caught and thrown in jail, and the police stole the boat. William Jefferson spent time in jail. J I Keat paid his fine. William never knew who paid his fine. Years later J I Keat told Bernice the story.
