William Richard Harry was born in 1899 at Plymouth in Devon, son of Jane Ann Harry, formerly Smith, and her husband William Richard Harry, a plasterer. Young William appears in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Plymouth.

William has yet to be traced after 1911, partly because a similarly aged William Richard Harry from Cornwall moved to Plymouth, joining the Royal Marines in 1915, making it hard to tell which one is which after that.
