Facts and Events
William Harradine’s origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is in 1659, by which time he was married to a Margaret and living at Guilden Morden in Cambridgeshire. The Harradine family seems to have been well-established in Guilden Morden. Unusually the family was known by interchangeable surnames, being known as both Bartle and Harradine, sometimes being recorded as “Bartle alias Harradine” or similar. The reasons for this alternate naming are unclear. Most of the records for this adult William are under the name Harradine, but there are a couple of instances where he was recorded under the name Bartle.
William and Margaret appear to have had ten children baptised at Guilden Morden between 1659 and 1679, although one son died as a baby in 1666, and another daughter died in 1679. There were also other children of William Harradine baptised at Guilden Morden from 1685 onwards into the 1690s (whose mother is not named), but with the time gaps involved it is considered less likely that those children were from the same couple.
William died in 1710, being buried at Guilden Morden on 20th February. Margaret survived him by two years.

Baptisms / 1632 Apr 15 HARRODEN William son of John
This is the most likely baptism found to date, being apparently the only William Harradine baptised at Guilden Morden at a plausible time to be the William Harradine who was having children there from 1659 onwards. However, there is a significant gap in the Guilden Morden registers through the period of the Civil Wars and the Commonwealth and Protectorate, with no baptisms or burials recorded between 1640-1649, and no marriage recorded between 1640-1659. As such, further supporting evidence would be required beyond the coincidence of being the same name in the same parish to be confident that this is the correct baptism. Prior to the Civil Wars, there appear to have been three Harradine households having children at Guilden Morden, all of whom were recorded interchangeably under the names Bartle and Harradine, and sometimes explicitly being recorded as “Bartle alias Harradine” or similar. These three households were Richard Harradine or Bartle and his wife Abra Williamson, John Harradine or Bartle and his wife Helen Sekins, and Marmaduke Harradine or Bartle and his wife Prudence. It therefore seems likely that Richard, John and Marmaduke were related, possibly brothers. The Guilden Morden registers only survive from 1598 – if Richard, John and Marmaduke had been baptised at Guilden Morden prior to 1598 (which would only put them in their 20s or 30s when they started having children) then the records of their baptisms are lost, and the reason for the alias surnames (which persisted for many years among their descendants) is possibly therefore lost too.
