William and Elizabeth purchased land along Rockcastle Road ( now KY Rt 3) near Clifford, Lawrence Co., Ky. They built their homplace there and raised their children. As of 2007 , the homeplace is still standing.


William served in the Civil war both for Kentucky and Virginia ( now West Virginia)

William enrolled from May 21, 1864 - June 22, 1864, Ky Co H , 68th Enrolled Militia . William S. Hammond applied for pension from serving in the civil war, his soldier's certificate No. 895589, Rank of Private in Co. H 68 Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Malita Ky. He said he had 10 children living , and their ages range from the date of 1850 up to 1875. Some of the birthdays of his children are off by a day or two. His son John Hammonds was listed as being born in 1868 but he was not listed on the 1870 census. His daughter Emma Jane Hammond was also left off the 1870 Census and in 1880 census she is 16 years. On the pension papers William answers yes to he is married to Elizabeth Hammond formerly Fluty and that they where married Nov. 1 1, 1847 in Lawrence Co. Ky. by Thomas Kirk and was recorded at Lousia, Lawrence Co. Ky. Was not married before. Was discharged July of 1864 and states he was born January 22, 1824 in Clay Co. Ky. The papers has his physical measuremen as 6 ft. tall, fair complexion and had blue eyes and black hair. His occupation was farming.
