William Alexander Graham (September 5, 1804August 11, 1875) was a United States Senator from North Carolina from 1840 to 1843, a Senator later in the Confederate States Senate from 1864 to 1865, the 30th Governor of North Carolina from 1845 to 1849 and U.S. Secretary of the Navy from 1850 to 1852, under President Millard Fillmore. He was the Whig Party nominee for vice-president in 1852 on a ticket with General Winfield Scott.
William Alexander Graham was born in Lincoln County, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and served several terms in the NC legislature. He filled an unexpired term in the U.S. Senate and, four years later, was elected governor. Graham urged the appointment of a commissioner of common schools and establishment of the institutions for the insane, deaf, dumb, and blind. From these recommendations, a school for the deaf and dumb opened in Raleigh in 1845. In 1850, Graham accepted appointment as Secretary of Navy. During his term as Secretary of Navy, the famous Perry expedition to Japan occurred. In 1852, Graham was nominated as a vice-presidential candidate on a Whig ticket with General Winfield Scott. Even though the Scott-Graham ticket did not win the election, Graham remained active in politics by serving in the Confederate Congress and on a board to administer a fund for education in the south
