The name William is based on analysis of Prince William Co VA records from 1787 to 1806.

In a letter written in 1880s by his grand daughter Harriet Gambrel Jackson, she states that her grandfather was "James Gambrel a Scotchman". Analysis of tax lists indicate that William Gambrill was quite likely the same person.
