In 1850 Census William Fosky is enumerated in his mother Elender Foskey’s household in Pulaski County, Georgia with half-brothers Henry, Barry, brother Jacob and half-sisters Becky and Sarah. He is 10 years old and born in Georgia. William enlisted 4 March 1862 in Pulaski County, Georgia and served as a private in Company K, 49th Georgia Infantry. About August 20, 1862 he was taken prisoner while on march to Manassas. On 15 September, 1862 he was paid after being paroled. On 8 October, 1862 he was sick and furloughed for 60 days at Wayside or General Hospital No. 9 in Richmond, Virginia. In Jan/Feb 1863 he was absent without leave and overpaid by $75.00. In March/April 1863 he was under "arrest, overpaid $75.00, no furlough." 31 July 1863 William appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War at General Hospital, Chester, Pa. Captured at Gettysburg (South Mountain) on 4 July 1863. On 4 July 1863 William was captured at South Mountain, Maryland. His name appears as signature to a Roll of Prisoners of War paroled at Fort McHenry, Maryland and transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware 9 July 1863. On 30 July, 1863 he was transferred to Chester Hospital, Pa. His name appears as signature to a Roll of Prisoners of War paroled until exchanged at U.S. Army General Hospital, Chester, Pa. (not dated). On 31 Aug 1863 he was part of a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Virginia. (Muster Roll dated 25 Sep 1863. May/June 1864 - "absent sick in hospital." (Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia) Sept/Oct, 1864 - "absent sick in hospital." William appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War received and transferred in the Dept. of West Va. From October 1, 1864 to January 1, 1865. (Roll was not dated.) William was captured 11 Dec 1864 and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio 27 Dec. 1864. 11 Dec 1864 William appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War. Received from Wheeling W Va. 28 Dec 1864. "Desires to take the oath." William also appears on a List of Prisoners continued in Military Prison at Wheeling, Va. (also know as Atheneum Prison). 25 Dec. 1864. He is 22 years old, 6 ft. tall, fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. He was arrested by US Troops at Calhoun County, W Va on 11 Dec. 1864. Company Muster Roll - Nov/Dec 1864 and Jan/Feb 1865 he is listed as "Absent Sick." (Didn/t they know he had been captured?) William's name appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War enlisted at Camp Chase, Ohio in U.S. service and transferred to Chicago, Ill, 20 March 1865. It states he was captured 15 Sept, 1864. References
