William came to America as a Revolutionary War Soldier. He was a tailor by trade. There are conflicting reports that he was from Liverpool England or Ireland.

William E. DODRILL, known as " English Bill." m. Rebecca DOUGHERTY in 1784 Greenbrier Co. & moved to the mouth of Kanawha. The Indians being hostile, he almost gave away his large tract of land & joined in the eastern movement. He settled on Peter's creek where he remained for 4-5 years. In 1799 he again changed his residence to the Birch river valley, settling at Boggs in Webster Co. The orginial name was DODDRIDGE, and he is listed under that name on the Kanawha County tax rolls for 1799. A change was made in the orthography before he left Greenbrier Co. Greenbrier County record s also list "William Doddridge" as the second husband of Rebecca Lewis. William Earl "English Bill" Dodrill: Tax List : 1799, Kanawha County, (West) Virginia. The name DODRILL has been adopted by all his descendents.

James m. Elizabeth GREGORY & he was the father of: Isaac, George, William, Robert, Charles & Joseph.

George m. Levicy GIVEN; Isaac m. Maria CONRAD; William m. Levicy MILLER then Mary HAMRICK. Robert m. Jane HAMRICK & was a distiller of apple brandy; Charles m. Margaret GIVEN & was the best known man in Webster at his death.

John, the 2nd son m. Margaret LEWIS of Greenbrier Co. & resided on Birch river in Nicholas Co. He was the father of: William, James Walton, Franklin, Martin, Arthur & Addison. William, James & Martin m. Sarah, Rebecca & Isabel, daughters of William HAMRICK, the noted hunter. Franklin & Arthur m. Maria & Jane, daughters of Peter HAMRICK of Braxton Co. Addison m. Almira GREGORY, daughter of William GReGORY, the class leader. William emigrated to the west at the close of the Civil War & died in Nebraska. Addison moved to Webster Co..

When a young man, George, the 3rd son went west to seek his fortune &located in Pickaway Co., Ohio. William, the 4th son died in his 21st year.

Of the daughters it was often said that none were fairer or better disposition in the county. Each was renowned for their Christian virtues & each made an excellent wife. Martha m. James MOLLOHAN & her son Charles was a Methodist preacher. Wesley MOLLOHAN, who was the best known & one of the most successful Lawyers in WV, was his son.

Mary m. George MOLLOHAN. It was he who entered the bear cave on the head of Little Birch. His brother-in-law, Joshua STEVENSON , who married Nancy, was with him on that hunt. Rebecca m. Adam GREGORY of Webster Co.

Addison DODRILL is the on living grandson of William DODRILL, the old pioneer at this time (1915). By what a slender thread this generation is bound to the past. He is 76 & in a few fleeting years at most the last of these grand old characters will have crossed over to the world beyond.
