    25. WILLIAM ACKLIN8 DEHART (SIMON7, SIMON6, ELIAS SIMON5, SIMON AERTSZEN4, AERT SYMOSZ3, SYMON JACOBUS2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1752 in Virginia, and died Bet. 1825 - March 1826 in Ohio near Cincinnati in the old Miami Canal bed. He married MARY PATTEN June 19, 1794 in Madison Co, KY. She was born Abt. 1760 in prob. KY, and died Aft. 1830 in Prob. Switzerland Co, IN.
    Notes for WILLIAM ACKLIN DEHART: In 1796, he lived in Madison Co, KY. Through his attorney, Acklin Dehart transferred two deed titles for Botetourt County property he inherited from his father. Deeds were transferred on 2 Aug 1796 and 9 July 1799 ("DeHart and Justice Genealogy" by Robert and Rena DeHart). On November 08, 1824, he served on a Grand Jury in Grant Co, KY (Court Order Book 1, 1820-1824, Grant Co, KY).

    COURT: Acklin DeHart vs Peter Younger, 1 Nov 1825
    The plaintiff holds a note against Peter Younger for $287 dated 23 Nov 1823. The note was originally to William Huffman who reassigned the note to Acklin DeHart. $7.00 had been paid 6 Sept 1824 and $16.00 on the 14th April 1825. Acklin sued for the remainder and costs.
    Simon's grandson, Edwin Howe DeHart, wrote that his father Simon was taken to Grant Co, KY when he was 8 years old, and soon after "his father lost his life, together with a number of his fellow workmen, in a quicksand cave-in, by being buried alive in the old Miami Canal Bed, where Cincinnati now stands, where he was at the time, working with a company of Canal Excavators" (Source: DeHart, Edwin Howe, Letter to Mr. A.J.     Family sheet from Mrs. Virginia Hanks says Acklin DeHart was buried alive in a quicksand cave-in while working on a canal located where Cincinnati OH now stands. After this [his wife] Mary and the children moved to KY. His estate was probated 31 March 1826 in Grant Co KY.
    Notes for MARY PATTEN: Edwin H. DeHart wrote in 1934 that his grandmother moved to Switzerland Co, IN soon after the death of her husband.

    Letters of administration is granted Mary Dehart on the estate of Acklin Dehart, deceased, she took the oath required by law and together with Harmon Childres her security, executed and acknowledged bond in open court in the penalty of $600.
    On motion of admx. ordered that Simon Nichols, John Lawless, Clayton Skirvin and John Mitts or any three of them who being first duly sworn be and they are hereby appointed commissioners to appraise in current money the personal estate (and slaves if any) of Acklin Dehart, deceased, and return an inventory thereof to court (source: Grant County Order Books 1820-1829).

    Notes for WILLIAM DEHART: The following was written by Edwin Howe Dehart in 1934: "Uncle William went overland in an ox wagon with a band of gold hunters about 1848 or 1849, and our family lost trace of him in a few years after they arrived at the Pacific coast. They started with teams of strong oxen, two teams to each wagon, and
    arrived there with only two lean oxen, the Indians and Mormons having overpowered and taken all others, together with most all else they possessed."
