After the death of his father, about 1758, Wm III moved his family south through the Shenandoah Valley to Bedford Co., VA (The area he settled is just east of the present day Roanoke), but was then the western frontier of the Virginia Colony. As did his neighbors, William served in the Bedford County Militia to protect the community from Indian attacks which were prevalent during the French and Indian War. William served as a road overseer, appraiser of estate, Juryman, etc. ... In July 1768, he received a land grant of 376 acres in Bedford Co. on Cub Branch, a west branch of Gill's Creek. He also obtained 222 acres on Maggotty Creek in Bedford County. Sometime between 1768 & 1772, the family moved from Bedford Co., to Washington Co. Va & settled near Saltville, in present day Smyth Co., VA.. The area near Saltville was at that time known as Big Buffalo Lick. The salt lick located there was an attraction for all types of game, especially elk, deer, bear and buffalo. Four of his sons took a very active part in the American Revolution. (Crabtrees cites St. John's & St. George's Parish Records, 2BA, p 195) William Crabtree III, was among the most noted of the American Long Hunters, he served in the Militia as well as in Lord Dunsmore's war as a scout. He along with his brother John, his brother in law John James Poteet, went to Bedford Co. VA. about 1756-57. Later he moved on to Washington Co. VA. settling in the area where the city of Saltville now stands. He received pay for services in the French and Indian War in 1758, in 1774 he served as Scout and Guard at an upper Fort. He reportedly was a Lt. in the Battle of Kings Mountain under Gen. Campbell. He was reportedly captured by the Indians and later escaped as recounted by John Carr. He owned 98 Acres on North Fork, 5-26-1774, and 79 Acres on Rich Valley North Fork Holston 12-5-1774. Name: William CRABTREE III Sex: M Birth: 22 DEC 1726 in Baltimore Co., Maryland Death: FEB 1777 in Smyth Co., Virginia Note: WILLIAM CRABTREE III, like his forebearers, was a successful farmer, but land was getting scarce in Baltimore County. The floods of settlers into the area had boosted land prices and it made it difficult to obtain new lands on which to grow the necessary food to feed a growing family. William needed more land and land he could afford. During the mid 1700's reports were reaching Baltimore County of a vast fertile valley to the Southeast, where good farm land was available for the asking. This area was the upper Shenandoah Valley and the various valley's that comprise the Great Valley of Virginia. So, after his father's death, in about the year 1758, William moved his family southward through the Shenandoah Valley to Bedford County, Virginia, (the area he settled is just east of present day Roanoke). This area was then the Western Frontier on the Virginia Colony. As did his neighbors, William served in the Bedford County Militia to protect the community from Indian attacks which were prevalent during the French and Indian war. William Crabtree III prospered in Bedford County, his family grew larger and he was able to obtain a considerable amount of land from the government. In July of 1768, he received a land grant of 378 acres in Bedford County on cub Branch, a west branch of Gills Creek. He also obtained 222 acres on Maggotty Creek in Bedford County. By the late 1760's, the area where he lived in Bedford County was becoming thickly settled. His sons were coming of age and they wanted farms of their own. Once again the Crabtree family was in need of good, low cost farm land. This meant moving further West, following the frontier. Sometime between the years 1768-1772, William moved his family from Bedford County to Washington County, Virginia ( the area settled in is near Saltville, in the present day Smyth County, Virginia). The area near Saltville was at that time known as Big Buffalo Lick, the salt lick located there was an attraction for all types of game, especially elk, deer, bear and buffalo. This meant excellent hunting for the settlers. There was also plenty of good farm land in the area available for the taking. Also, the salt from the salt lick was used as a preservative, an essential commodity to the pioneers. So, it was there, in Saltville, that William Crabtree spent his last days. He was a well-known farmer and woodsman. He had hundreds of acres of land on which he raised catle, sheep, and a variety of crops. He raised a large family, with four of his sons taking a very active part in the American Revolution.
