William M. Cheever.
IN Memory of MrWILLIAM CHEEVER, sho Died Novr 29th 1786 in the 35 Year of his Age. [Note: this memorial identifies his parents as William Downes Cheever and Elizabeth Edwards of Boston. Note what NEHGR, Vol. 36, p. 312 says about that man: b. Boston 27 Jul 1752, graduated Harvard 1771, d. Boston 2 Dec 1786, no wife listed. Suffolk probate 18797 shows William Downes Cheever administrator of William Cheever late of Boston Merchant. Meanwhile, a separate probate file, Essex probate 5265, shows that on 6 Feb 1787 Rebekah Cheever widow was appointed administratrix of Mr William Cheever late of Salem Cordwainer deceased. It is clear two men have been conflated and this memorial has identified the wrong parents and wrong birthdate.]
