    William Harvey Caldwell was the son of James and Jane Caldwell of Botetourt County, later Craig County, Virginia. He was a direct decendant of the Scots-Irish settlers of Cub Creek, Virginia, in Lunenburg County. He was a farmer, and enrolled in the service of Company F, 30th Battalion Virginia Sharp Shooters, Confederate States Army on January 31, 1863, at New Castle, Craig County and died as a result of typhoid pneumonia on May 18, 1863, at Emory and Henry College in Washington County, VA. He was married to Mariah Francis Craft, and was the father of nine children.
