William Brown and Co., Glasgow oil Co., were bankrupt in 1858; Charles Wilsone Brown, son, referred to his father in law, Mr. Rowan and Walter Buchanan (Glasgow Herald 8jan1858). In law case Western Bank vs Buchanan, marriage contract of Charles Wilsone Brown and Ellen Buchanan (14oct1846), Walter Buchanan of Shandon, James Brown of William Brown and Co., Stockwell St., Glasgow, and Andrew Buchanan, MD, Glasgow, are mentioned (Glasgow Herald 14nov1861, 10may1865). In 1820 William Brown, oil and colour merchant, was at 101 Trongate; William Brown and Co., oil and colour merchants, 24 Stockwell St., had house at 9 Moore Pl. in 1831 and at Kilmardinny in 1841 (PO Directory). William Brown, who was Dean of Guild in 1837 and 1856, owned Kilmardinny from 1833 to 1844 (Glasgowstory). References
