- 1825 - father dies of malaria and he inherits Limerick Plantation, but because he is a minor it is managed by trustees until he comes of age
- 1842 - sister Jane's husband dies and he assumes management of Quenby Plantation
- 1842 - purchases Halidon Hill Plantation
- 1850 - purchases Cedar Hill Plantation
- 1852 - brother John dies and he assumes management of Hyde Park Plantation
- 1857 - purchases Cherry Hill Plantation
- 1859 - purchases The Blessing, a 631 acre tract of land
- 1861 - Civil war begins - he is managing 8 plantations
- 1865 - Civil war ends - he owns 5 plantations: The Blessing, Cedar Hill, Cherry Hill, Halidon Hill and Limerick
- 26 Feb 1865 - Union soldiers appear at Limerick Plantation to inform the slaves that they are free ; 29 Freedmen decide to sign a labor contract and remain on the plantation
