Graduated from Trinity College Dublin in the Spring of 1831 with an A.B. degree, and an M.B. degree in the summer of 1834. Named for his paternal grandfather who was a merchant in Cavan Town. He initially worked as a physician but later became a JP and Magistrate in Cavan. In 1876, he owned 94 acres of land (Land Owners in Ireland, 1876, Reprinted: Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, MD, 1998.) He is thought to have married once, to Elizabeth Smith.
