Franklinton, La., June 18---Robert Babington, one of the oldest citizens of this place, quietly passed away this morning at 1:30 o'clock. Mr. Babington was born in Cavan, Ireland, in July, 1820. At the age of 18 years he came to New York, but remained there only a short time, after which he came to New Orleans, where he was employed for several years as a salesman in a dry goods establishment. He left New Orleans and resided a while at Covington, then Springfield, and later he moved to this place, where in 1856 he established a mercantile business, which is in existence to-day under the name of the Babington-Bateman Company, Limited. He joined the Methodist Church when 20 years old, and has since been one of the strongest men in Louisiana in the M. E. Church, South. He was Superintendent of the Franklinton M. E. Sunday School for over forty-seven years. He was a member of Franklinton Lodge No. 101, F. and A. M., and was for several years Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. He was also a member of the Knights Templar. On Oct. 26, 1853, he was married to Ellen Ellis, besides whom he has to survive him four sons, Wm. W., Thos. M. and Robert H., residing here, and Senator C. S. E. Babington, residing in Covington, La., and two daughters, Mrs. L. L. Lampton and Mrs. I. W. Lampton, of Magnolia, Miss., and twenty-nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral sermon will be preached at the M. E. Church on Tuesday at 3 o'clock, and the services at the grave will be conducted by the Masonic Fraternity.
