Military

Left Lumpkin Co. GA to enlist in Confederate army in Richmond, VA. Fought from there to the sea - until surrender. He didn't see his son John until he was 4 yrs. old. Hid from Sherman in swamps near Savannah. Chewed sassafras and drank water from cow tracks to stay alive. (per conversation with his grandson, M.F. Armstrong)

Death

He & Davey Harris built 1st 2 power plant dams for Gainesville & Dahlonega Railroad. Built house 300-400 yards from dam. Had gristmill, sawmill & cotton gin. Drowned going over falls. Grandson M.F. Armstrong told this author that he remembered going to funeral.
