Parentage

The Whitmell Stephens who married Elizabeth is usually said to be the son of Solomon, although Solomon's brother Joshua also had a son named Whitmell, born at about the same time. In support of that assignment, it should be noted that the Whitmell who was the son of Joshua was one of the administrator's of Joshua's estate in 1855, about the time that the Whitmell who married Elizabeth presumably was in Mississippi where his daughter Polly was said to be born in 1846.[2] As well, the Whitmell Stephens who married Nancy named several children for other members of Joshua Stephen's family.

On the other hand, the Whitmell who married Elizabeth was in Scott County, Tennessee in 1860, while Elijah, a known son of Joshua, was in Scott County, Tennessee in 1870. As well, Joshua's daughter Jane married a King, suggesting an on-going association with the King family.

While it is likely that the Whitmell who married Elizabeth is probably the son of Solomon, better documentation would be helpful.

  3. There are two Whitmell Stephens, first cousins, born within a year of each other. One married Elizabeth (Waters), and is usually (although not always) said to be the son of Solomon and Sarah (Meadows) Stephens. The other married Nancy (Watson) and is usually said to be the son of Solomon's brother Joshua. Documentation for the assignments has yet to be made publicly available, and both assignments should be treated with caution until such documentation is made public.
