According to E. Leonard, in The Newton Genealogy (de Pere, Wisc., 1915)

WHITMAN MEAD NEWTON' (John', William W.^ John^ Obediali*, Thomas', Jolm-, Kiehard'), son of John and Abiah (Miller) Newton of Bainbridge, N. Y., was bom there August 20 or 30, 1830, and died in Texas, September —, 1878. He married at Bainbridge, N. Y., in 1854 or 1855, Cornelia Bottsford, daughter of Gideon and Olive ( ) Bottsford. Mr. Newton was a miller.
