Whitley was born 28feb1830 in Dublin. He studied law at Trinity College. In 1851 he became a student at the Inner Temple, practised as a lawyer in London 1855.1862 and then went to India. In 1865 he married Mary Bazely, had 3 sons and 2 daughters. In 1882 he left India for London. In 1884 he married Elizabeth Temple (who died 1901). He died 13apr1909 in London (Documents of Ireland). “His personality was attractive though in later years somewhat eccentric and those who knew him were always impressed by the sweetness of his voice and his great charm of manner“ (the Times newspaper). Unlike his father and grandfather, Whitley Stokes (1830-1909) was not a physician, but followed his father's interest in Irish society and Celtic studies. He was also an eminent lawyer, who spent over twenty years in India, and wrote several reference works on Indian law. He is best known for his works on Irish language and old Irish glosses.
