Wellington Alvit Clarke was the seventh of ten living children born to Alvit and Sally Davis Clarke. He was born in Plainfield, N. Y., Sept 27, 1838 and died at the County Hospital (after two months illness), May 15, 1928.
In 1856 his parents moved to Wisconsin, first locating in Walworth for a year, then coming to Milton and purchasing a quarter section of land east of Milton, a part of which is now owned by his nephew, J. D. Clarke.
In the early sixties, he was married to Mrs. Finette McPherson in Janesville.
They purchased a farm in Alden, Minnesota where one daughter Estelle and two sons, Martin and Herman were born. Estelle died at the age of thirteen in 1879.
After a period of years they moved to Milton, finally purchasing the Ezra Crandall house on Madison avenue.
Mr. Clarke was in the employ of a railroad company in the northern part of the state for several years - as long as his health permitted. He was a man of kind, generous nature and always honest with his fellowmen. He was a member of the Alden Seventh Day Baptist church.
Funeral services were held at Whaley's undertaking rooms, Thursday at 2:30 conducted by Rev. J. L. Skaggs of Milton. Interment was made in the Milton cemetery.
