Nothing is really known about Walter Todman before his marriage to Martha Sarah Ellis in 1892.

(Research):Establishing where Walter Todman was born:- 1894 on his daughter's Martha's b/c Essex, England 1895 on his daughter's Ivy Florence b/c Stepheney, London 1897 on his son's Walter Victor b/c Surrey, England 1903 on his daughter's Hazel May's b/c Essex, England 1906 on his son's Lincoln James b/c Essex, England 1908 on his daughter's Charlotte Mary b/c Norfolk, England 1910 on his daughter's Alma Dudley b/c Norfolk, England

On all birth certificates the informant was Martha Todman, mother; although the place of birth is always different his age is always consistent with being born in 1866.

A second Walter Todman? we had found a Walter Todman who fathered a Walter Todman in 1890 with a Jane Levey. This Walter Todman was born in Norfolk, England who was 25 years old at the time therefore being born c 1865. A possible match for our Walter. (note Walter and Jane were not married)

The address listed was 9 Bailey Street, Newtown

Pros as to why this might be our Walter Todman

  • the potential birth of both Walter's is almost the same
  • Norfolk is listed as one of the possible birth places of our Walter and is listed as the birth place of this second Walter Todman
  • He is also a blacksmith

[We have been unable to find the marriage or death of a Jane Levey or her son Walter todman in N.S.W or Vic; perhaps Jane did marry or take some elses name and changed her son's name to that surname also?]

[Efforts to try and establish whether these two Walter Todman's are the same person Tried to locate the locate Walter Todman in NSW after/before 1890 particularly at 9 Bailey Street, Newtown. By following his movements it was hoped that we would be able to distinguish between the two Walter's if they weren't the same person Records that we consulted while in NSW were:- 1. 1891 NSW Census - taken on 16th April 1891. 9 Bailey Street Newtown was uninhabited. This could indicate a number of things, that after Walter Todman son of Jane Levey and Walter Todman was born the couple moved from the house either together or separately. 2. Sydney Sands Postal Directory - 1888 - 1890 did not list a Walter Todman at any location. In 1890 the person living at 9 Bailey Street, Newtown was Miss Mary A Currey. This could mean that Miss Currey lived by herself or was incharge of a boarding house or ??. If the dwelling was a boarding house or similiar Walter and/or Jane could have lived there as well. There was Todmans listed in the Directory including a George F Todman and in 1890 a Herman Todman, neither of these were living near Newtown. 3. Electoral Role 1889 - 1890 no Walter Todman listed. In 1889 a George Todman was listed (not ours as far as we can establish)]

A Jane Todman shows up on Sand and Macdougall directory in coburg in 1907 only. This may only be a coincidence - but if this was infact Jane Levy, her son Walter would have been about to turn 18 perhaps she had appeared to collect his share of his inheritance or something.

Cons

  • why would you call a second son by the same name? ie Walter Victor Todman by the same name as your first son?

Possibility that Walter Todman was not his original name Written by Simon Todman Who was Walter Todman. This is probably the most perplexing question in the Family tree. Evidences points to the person of James Lincoln Temple Willoughby. Finding out if Walter was James relies in several facts he left behind him .

Fact 1 His age. Walter died in October 1929 aged 63. Documentation on the birth certificates of his children states that he was born either late 1865 or early 1866. English records listed on the indicate that there were only two Walter Todman's born between Mar 1860 and Dec 1870, they were

1.Walter Todman - reference Births Mar 1866 Greenwich 1d 711
2.Walter Todman - reference Births Sep 1865 Hambledon 2a 109
died in 1887 and the other in 1959. James Lincoln Temple Willoughby was born 1/11/1865.

Fact 2 His occupation. Walter was a blacksmith as was James LincolnTemple Willoughby.

Fact 3 His father's occupation. On his marriage certificate Walter's father was a ropemaker , James Lincoln Willoughby.father Charles was a ropemaker.

Fact 4 Family legend states that Walter changed his name from Willoughby to Todman. Todman is a rare name . James Lincoln Willoughby mother was Mary Ann Ramsey Todman.

Fact 5 The only marriage I have found between a Willoughby and a Todman occured in 1854 when Charles Willoughby married Mary Ann Ramsey Todman in Gillingham Kent.

Fact 6 On his marriage certificate Walter's mother was Mary Ann Willoughby. [Possibility - James Lincoln Temple Willoughby's mother was Mary Ann Willoughby (nee Todman).]

Fact 7 On his marriage certificate Walter's father was Walter Todman. I have not found any proof of any Walter Todman being old enough to be the father of Walter 1866. The first Walter I have found was born in 1852.

Fact 8 1890 saw Walter Todman 24 sire a baby in Sydney . He was listed as a blacksmith from Norfolk. 1892 saw Walter Todman 26 get married in Melbourne . He was listed as a blacksmith from Essex. James Lincoln Willoughby was born in Bermondsey Kent and the family moved to Essex when he was 4.

Fact 9 Walter's 2nd son was christened Lincoln James Todman . Is this a cue of a previous identity of James Lincoln Temple Willoughby.

Fact 10 Walter's watch was given to Lincoln James Todman. The initials are J.L.T.W. Is this another cue of a previous identity of James Lincoln Temple Willoughby.

Fact 11 Lincoln's death certificate lists his father as Walter James Todman.

Fact 12 James Lincoln Temple Willoughby's grandmothers name was Charlotte. Walter Todman's 4th daughter (who died in infancy) was called Charlotte Mary - maybe after his granmother and mother.

The Sands Directory was a residential and business directory for the City and Suburbs of Sydney, published between 1858 and 1932. Walter Todman can only be found listed in the 1831 Directory
  37. at the time of his marriage to Martha.
  38. from the time of his marriage, and for the birth of his first two children. He had no independent listing in the trade section of the Sands & McDougall postal directory, so it is possible that he was not yet self-employed at this stage and instead was working for someone.
  39. However, when and how he arrived in Victoria has not yet been established. There are several patents applied for by a Walter Todman in New South Wales, but as yet we are not sure if they are our Walter Todman. It could be that Walter was in Sydney before coming to Melbourne. It is also thought that he may have had a partner (who he never married) and a child called Walter born in 1890
The signature on the Patent appears to be the same signature as our Walter Todman's signature.
  40. DOMESTIC TROUBLES.

    EXTRAORDINARY REMARKS ßY A

    JUSTICE OF THE PEACH.

Walter Todman was charged before the Prahran Police Court yesterday with leaving his wife, Martha Todman, without means of support Complainant, in her evidence, said her husband, who was a waiter, was in the habit ot handing her his earnings each week, but on Sunday week be refused to give her any money, and since then she could not live with him on account of his temper and disgusting language.

The Chairman (Dr. Featherston, J.P.) - Rubbish! You married the man for better or worse, and must put up with it.

Mrs. Todman admitted having Struck her husband with some baby's clothes.

Dr. Featherston. - I think it is your own fault. Few men can stand a slap in the face.

Mrs. Todman.-I will keep myself if he will support the children.

Dr. Featherston.-It Is a pity you did not think of this before you were married. The best thing would be to put you both in a bag and shake you up together. I think the defendant is a bit of a mule.

An order was made for the payment of 20s. per week, defendant to find one surety of £25 for the fulfilment of the order.
  41. Both buildings were brick with 6 rooms each, and valued at £40.
The original person listed for 576 in the rates book was Reinhardt Fredrick but his name was subsquently crossed out during the year and replaced by Walter Todman's name.
  42. Walter had expanded his rental properties during the year by having taken over 580.
  43. The family lived in the first building and set-up a workshop next door in 578.
  44. It appears that Walter has relinquished his extra rental property of 576 in 1898 as his name had crossed out in the rates book and replace by another person name.
  45. Once again Walter has begun to rent 576, his business must have been expanding.
  46. his workshop appears to have doubled inside and the family have moved into a new premises next door to his workshop

It looks as though he was going to move into 474/476 Chapel St however did not, his name was replaced by Peacock Gordon, gentleman moved in May 1911 the property. owner Lawrence Preston tenant (written above in different handwritting - motor hire & repair company).

  56. to Milton Livingstone Davey (this probably the same Milton Livingstone Davey who died yr1938 #1234) This is the second of 3 intial mortgages that appear to be taken out on this property.
  57. It appears that after buying the property that he then mortgaged on the same day to the following people - Lilian Elizabeth Smith, Annie Jane Orr and Milton Livingstone Davey.
(It looks as though there is a "joint mortage" on both 3 Cato Street, Prahran and the property on Point Nepean Road, Chelsea as can be seen by the instrument number being applied to both properties.)
  58. on what was then the Melbourne to Franskston Road, which later became the Point Nepean Road, and as it is called today the Nepean Highway.

  59. to Lilian Elizabeth Smith, Annie Jane Orr and Milton Livingstone Davey. This is the third of 3 intial mortgages that appear to be taken out on this property. 67. TODMAN - The Friends of WALTER TODMAN of No. 3 Cato street, Prahran, are informed that his funeral notice will proceed per mortuary train, leaving No. 10 platform, Flinders street, THIS DAY (Tuesday), at 1.40 o'clock, for interment in the Necropolis, Springvale.
RAYBOULDS, Funeral Directors, Prahran. Phone Win. 17.
  68. Walter died in October of 1929 before the mortgage was discharged.

Shortly after Walter died, Thomas Archibald a'Beckett (one of the mortgagers) also died, after examining the registration # of his death certificate he appears to have died early in 1930 (Ref - Yr1930 Reg#3360)]. Thomas A'Beckett was probated on the 10 April 1930, however the land of Walter Todman wasn't mentioned in the Inventory of the Probate (PROV 234/216), the probate however did mention that Thomas had shares in Equity Co. (615) valued at £1076.50.0. He also had interest in the following partnership business's
    1. A'Beckett & Chomley
    2. A'Beckett, Chamley and Henderson (credit)
    share of costs outstanding (estimated)
[Perhaps the land was tied up in the partnership business which is why we can't find probate for Walter?]

The mortgage is transferred to William Hamilton James by two solicitors who were registered as Proprietors of the instrument of mortgage from Walter Todman.(I'm not sure what is meant by Proprietors of the instruments - if they were now the owners why isn't there a listing of them on the back of the title - to show change of title which is necessary to prove ownership in Victoria?).
  69. the mortgage was transferred to Julius Joseph Dennis by two solicitors who were registered as Proprietors of the instrument of mortgage from Walter Todman, the same two who involved in the sale of 3 Cato Street, Prahran.

I have no idea why there is a 6 year delay in selling the Point Nepean Rd property in contrast to 3 Cato Street, Prahran.
It appears that Walter refinanced 3 Cato Street, Prahran and Point Nepean Rd. Chelsea with the same two people (father and daughter) at the same time - it appears that the two transactions were linked.)

It appears that the solicitors Henry Rawdon Francis Chomley and Allan Roderick Henderson had become the registered porporietors of Walter Todman's property which they sold for £216. (Chomley & Henderson were partners in business with a'Beckett who was the mortgager for Walter's property).
(as yet we have been unable to find a will to establish what Walter owned at the death and whether his wife inherited any of the money after his death)
