Facts and Events
was a carpenter, Joiner & Cabinet Maker. When I knew him he lived at High Wycombe, Bucks. When we were children Uncle Walter & Auntie Tot. came away with us in the summer to look after us whilst Mother was running the Butcher's shop at Uxbridge. Both Uncle & his son Eric were good cricketers and good at billiards and snooker. They played in village cricket matches and won billiard & snooker trophies at the Local Men's Institute. In the late twenties Uncle drew the favourite horse in the Irish sweep[stakes}. He sold half of it to the Victorian Sporting club in London. Although the banks were closed they sent the money down to High Wycombe in a taxi and got the local bank manager to open up the bank and accept the deposit. The horse only got a place so uncle, in addition to the £10,000, got £1,700 for a runner. With some of this money Uncle and Eric built a pair of two storied houses in Desborough Avenue in High Wycombe. References
