Enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces on 27 July 1915 at the age of 14 years old, misrepresenting his birth date as 10 Dec 1896. Deployed to England to fight in the Great War (WW1). Wounded and captured at Vimy Ridge, POW. Regiment #144619

Married after the war in Kendal, Westmorland, England before his return to Canada on 19 Jun 1919 at the age of 18.
