Walter Dobbs was said to be a mariner, living on Barren Island. It is commonly assumed that the Barren Island in Jamaica Bay is the one meant, however some believe it may have been Barren Island in the East River (today called Ward's Island). He married Mary Merritt probably about 1675, and they had three sons and three daughters. He is thought to have died in 1689, as his wife is said to have remarried then.

Lived on Barren Island in Flatlands, L.I.
