Wallace Pierson Talbot was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on 20 June 1838. Wallace enlisted in the Confederate forces on 7 June 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana. His war records show that he was a 26 year old single man, living in New Orleans and employed as a clerk. He was a member of Co. E (Crescent Rifles) of the 7th Regiment of the Louisiana Cavalry, sometimes called the Pelican Regiment. The regiment was under the direction of Colonel Harry Hayes and is sometimes called the Hayes Brigade. Louisiana’s infantry as a whole was noted for their tremendous bravery and risk taking and were also called Lee’s Tigers. Wallace was promoted from first sergeant to second lieutenant on 7 December 1861. He was listed as present for the battles of Bull Run, Manassas, Front Royal, Middletown, Manassas, Fredricksburg, Gettysburg and many others. He was wounded at the Battle of Sharpsburg in September, 1862 and died at the Battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. According to records at Gettysburg National Park he is buried in an unmarked grave on land which his now a county or township garage. |
