He owned an envelope factory (created in 1846) that he sold to U.S. Envelope Co. As late as 1979 it was still known as the W.H. Hill branch. Afterwards, Hill got into selling cosmetics and manufacturing perfume; also sold fine hand-tooled leather-bound books.

Per the Recollections of Yankee Hill, this son was likely named after a close friend of Hill's, Wade Hamption, who lived in South Carolina.
