She attended Woman's College (now UNCG) in Greensboro, NC, and Anderson College in Anderson, SC. She had worked as a Legal Secretary, Notary Public, Secretary to the Wayne County (NC) Clerk of Court, and as a Secretary for the Wayne County School System, before becoming a ceramics instructor and opening her own ceramic shop first in Goldsboro, NC, and later in Orangeburg, SC
