VIRGIL SCHOLES, YOUNG ATTORNEY, IS DROWNED SWEPT OVER DAM INTO MISSION CREEK CURRENT
Wading in Stream Trying to Rescue Family Dog - Wife Fails in Effort to Save Husband.
Virgil V. Scholes, 35, a prominent young Topeka Attorney, was drowned yesterday in MIssion creek when he was swept over a dam as he was trying to rescue a pup from the water. The drowning was about 4:30 o'clock at the Mission Club camp 12 miles west of Topeka, Mission Creek, swollen by recent rains, has been rather high the last few days.
Mr. & Mrs. Scholes were wading on the dam and their two young sons were sitting on the bank when a swift current swept the attorney over the dam. Scholes was unable to swim and it is believed also that he may have struck his head on a rock in the creek as he fell.
The dog managed to get back to the bank safely.

    Mrs. Scholes is rescued.
Mrs. Scholes attempted to rescue her husband but was unable to reach him and it was necessary for rescuers to come to her assistance. Scholes was in the water several minutes before members of the picnic party recovered the body. He appeared lifeless and failed to respond to first aid treatment. After unsuccessful attempts were made to revive him, he was rushed to Christ's Hospital and a first aid call sent to the fire department. Firemen also failed to revive him.
Scholes was one of the outstanding young lawyers of Topeka. He had been associated with the firm of Wheeler, Brewster and Hunt about eight years and has been a member of the firm for sometime.

Prominent in Tax Suit. Scholes was one of the attorneys of the board of education and as one of the attorneys for the banks took an active part in the bank litigation involving the intangabible tax law. He was associated with the firm of Stone, McDermott, Webb and Johnson at one time.
In addition to being a member of the bar association he was a member of the West Side Christian Church and the Masonic bodies.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert Virgil and Vernon Eugene Scholes; his mother, Mrs. C. B. Hypes and a sister, Mrs. C. A. Hooper, all of Topeka.
